My 10 month old son loves yogurt, but I don't know if it will hurt him or not. My husband has yogurt every day for breakfast and gives my son some--unfortunately now my husband will give him some (Yoplait, 6 oz serving, fat free). My son will eat just about the entire carton (but he normally goes through a 4oz jar of baby food at mealtime anyway). I just don't know if it's healthy or not for an infant to have that much yogurt, though I know they make baby yogurt. Anyone know? My ped is out of town for a week, but I'd like to know sooner.
Update:I was able to call my dr. and he said absolutely not, it could cause buildup of bacteria...anyone heard of this?

My baby has been having yogurt since she was 5 months old when i started her on cereal. She loves it.
There is nothing wrong in giving your child yogurt at his age. It will cause a steady buildup of good bacteria in his guts that will help keep him healthy and fight any bad bacteria.
So just keep giving it to him.
A baby *cannot* be lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance usually develops during young adulthood, but it can *never* happen before age 3-4.
However, it *is* possible for a baby to be allergic to dairy. In fact, it's the single most allergenic food for infants. If you are going to give any dairy products, yogurt is the least likely to cause an allergic reaction (because the milk protein is partially digested by the bacteria that create the yogurt out of milk), but it is safer to not give even yogurt before the baby's first birthday.
If you *are* giving yogurt to a baby, the best is plain unsweetened yogurt that is marketed to *everyone* (i.e. *not* "baby yogurt"). And you don't have to worry about bacteria "building up" in baby's body. Most yogurt don't have live cultures. And those that do contain acidophilus--a very healthy type of bacteria that will actually help baby's digestive system.
Yogurt is one of the first milk products babies are allowed to have. I think full fat yogurt is a wonderful treat for baby. The low fat kind should be ok since she's not eating only that. Just buy 1-2 containers a week and spread then out she'll be fine..
I've never heard of yogurt building up bacteria. My pediatrician recommended yogurt during bouts of stomach viruses and diarrhea to replace the "good" bacteria normally found in the intestines. It's also good for preventing yeast infections, something that babies in diapers are more prone to. It's a safe way for baby to be able to get some dairy before 1yr. because the milk sugars are already partially broken down by the cultures so it's easy to digest.
my daughter loves the whips. She can eat an entire thing too. as long as he doesn't show any weird signs that it's hurting him he should be fine. it's good to give them things like that. Try and give him some cottage cheese and she what he does with that. I hate cottage cheese but her grandparents love it so we tried it with her she's not so fond of it but, they say to offer it to them. I get a book once a month from the healthy start, grow smart program once a month. I'd say he is fine since there is no reaction. You can always call up the hospital and talk to a nurse on the baby floor or call up another doctor if it will make you feel a little better. Also baby yogurt is made with cow's milk just like ours except that his is whole milk where as ours isn't. So don't worry if your worried about giving him a product with milk,he can have cheese too.
My 10-month old loves yogurt too and it is very healthy for him. I can not hardly find things my baby likes so when i do and it is good for him, then why not give it to him. Check out the baby food section and see if you can find some. I have not looked because i know the other stuff is good for him. I just make sure i get sugar free.
Whole fat yogurt is great! I give my daughter on occasion an organic wholefat plain yogurt and I mix in jarred baby fruit. She loves it! Her Dr recommended it so I'm not sure why your Dr is so against it.
Myson is 11 months and my soctor told me that it is okay to have yogurt, but in a limited quantity because it is dairy. He's getting close enough to a year though that it really doesn't matter if it is PART of a balnced diet. My son likes yogurt too.
I think it would be fine. I do suggest Yo-Baby a baby yougurt that has added digestive organisms that help keep from giving your baby gas and tummy upset. I would be cautious of certain fruits your baby may have allergies to like pineapple that are in adult yogurts. Baby yogurts don't have fruit peices.
Yogurt is good for children too! as long as he doesn't develop a rash or anything it's actually healthy for him! Keep in mind if he does develop a slight rash it could be allergy to the fruit if other yogurts don't cause rash!
