I've got a 1988 mustang with a 8.8" limited slip rear end with 3:73 gears, it was already built when i got the car, ive got gear oil leaking into the passenger side brake drum i have mechanic skills but im not familiar with this rear end, can anybody tell me whats involved with replacing that seal, i.e. how does the axle come out, is the seal pressed in?, do i have a bearing to deal with or is the bearing in the diff? if anyone can help thanks

The axel is held in by the retaining plate by four bolts behind the brake mounting plate on the drum brake model, or behind the caliper bracket on the disc model. And yes you will have to have the bearing pressed off to gain access to the seal! The bearing is not reusable after it is removed. Good luck! The 8.8 does not use the GM type "c-clip"!!!
You have an axel seal leaking. Common problem take bout 2 to 4 hours depending on what tools you have.
Jack the car up and pull wheel and drum, drain rear end and pull back diff cover off, look for a small bolt on the carrier it has a long nose that sticks through the spider pin and holds it in. slide the spider pin out and push the axels in a C clip will fall out from the end of the axels remove the clip then the axel will pull out the seal will be in the end of the axel housing use a big screw driver or seal puller to pry out the seal look at the axle where the seal and bearing rides and see if there is any wear If there is they make a "axel" saver bearing (moves the riding surface or the bearing to another area on the axle.) take a big socket and use the "back side" (Flat) and put an extension in the business side (for a handle) to drive the seal in lube the seal with grease or oil and carefully side the axle back in try not to let the axle touch (rub) the seal . then take brake clean and wash all the old oil off the shoes and drum, if saturated badly replace the shoes while there, install C clip replace pin and cover refill the rear end with posi lube put the drum and tire back on and take off stands, WHILE WORKING UNDER A CAR BE SURE TO USE GOOD JACK STANDS NOT JUST A BUMMPER OR FLOOR JACK. IF THE CAR COMES DOWN YOU MAY NOT GET TO DRIVE IT AGAIN.
Look at your local parts store they have manuals to guide you through this process with photos which help allot.
Good luck
Keep the shinny side up and the dirty side down
i'm specific you recognize the adaptation between kit oil and brake fluid..yet only for protection's sake, be certain that's not leaking out of your brake cylinder (the section that pushes the pads aside interior the drum) whether it quite is, basically, a housing seal, it is going to only be a rely of disconnecting the emergency brake cable (if it runs on the bypass. area), eliminating the entire brake drum assembly, pulling the axle out, and changing the seal. The seal could desire to be in basic terms interior the rear-end housing. wish that helps!
