I recently had my car scanned and the error code was P0420. Mechanic told me I may need a new cat conv for appx $800-$1,000. My car is 10yrs old with 120,000 miles on it. I dont want to spend $800. Is it possible its just an 02 sensor? if not should I go to one of these cheap muffler shop and buy a cat conv? ...or can you recommend an honest affordable mechanic on the NW side of Chicago. Thanks

just take it to muffler shop and get cat conv took completely out and put pipe in and you will never have cat conv prob again if that what it is but yes it could be just an o2 sensor but putting pipe in will only cost bout 50 bucks cheaper than 02 sensor
I have been a mechanic for over 10 years. This code is in fact very common on this vehicle and 9 times out of 10 the fix is to just replace the catalytic converter for you P0420 fault code. However, there are other things that can cause this code as well. Both o2 sensors, leaky or plugged fuel injectors, leaky fuel pressure regulator, air or vacuum leaks and even exhaust leaks. Everything must be checked before the replacing the converter.
I would not recommended getting an aftermarket converter on your vehicle. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen customers do this and the same P0420 converter efficiency codes pops back up in the computer because of the faulty aftermarket part (catalytic converter). If this happens, then you will have to end up replacing it with a dealership part anyway and chances are you will not be happy with the place that put on the cheaper part to begin with.
Hope this helps!
Diagnostic Code P0420
I regarded in my OBD II diagnostic e book and it states," the performance of the catalytic converter measured by utilising comparing the interest of the front and rear Oxyen sensers. If the interest of the front and rear sensors corresponds extra then 80p.c.in 2 using cycles then this diagnnostic code is set" laymons words, is the catalytic converter isn't working good . Do you have a lost of potential additionally? that ought to propose it extremely is melted and is plugging up the exhaust. i wish I replied your question. I did the suited ought to for on line, good luck playstation if no drivablity issues, justchronic it it gained`t injury the engine in any respect. except you will possibly be able to desire to bypass a emissions try it ought to fail.
Yes, it could be a bad O2 sensor or a couple of other things that a good mechanic could eliminate first instead of soaking you for a new cat.
