First of all I've never worked with a Spincast reel, because any reel I use is open faced. My son wanted to go fishing with me tomorrow so I dug up my Grandad's old reel from the attic. It still had some line on there so I just used what was left. Set the bobber and hook on there. I tried testing it in our yard by throwing it into our pool. I casted the line out but it won't reel in, like I said I've never worked on these before, any ideas?

Zebco's 404 reels are fairly inexpensive... Over the years I have gone thru ALOT of the "less expensive" Zebco reels, simply because they are easy to use, cheap, and if they messed up and I couldn't easily and quickly repair them, I just tossed them in the trash and bought a new one. I used to keep 2 or 3 new 202's and/or 404's in my tackle box, and when one "broke", I simply replaced it with a new one... Zebco's 404 and 202 reels are inexpensive reels, easy for a beginning fisherman to use, and generally will last one or two seasons of medium to hard fishing... I honestly believe they are designed to be "disposable"...... My suggestion is to just buy the kid a new one, or better still a couple, and go fishing.
the line has probably gotten underneath the spool, wrapping around the shaft,
OR - more likely,
place some tension on the line by letting it pass through your fingers. another common problem with this series of reel is that it doesn't always readily pick up the line.
on top of everything else, you are going to destroy any interest the kid may possibly develop by NOT buying him his own new outfit. go to walmart and drop thirty bucks on an inexpensive outfit for him.
the 404 is already obsolete, in need of new line and they are not the most long-lived reel out there.
