I have a 91 Mustang 5.0. I ran out of gas and my mechanic claims that caused the fuel pump to burn out. Is that possible? I've had other cars in the past that have run dry with no problems.
(I know..watch the gas gauge) It was a pretty new fuel pump though.

HollifieldRobert is absolutely correct. The other things are if you have a lot of trash in the fuel tank and the fuel pump sucks it in and it destroys the pump. If you tried starting the vehicle after adding the fuel to an empty tank then you most likely ruined the pump. Properly priming the fuel lines by letting the fuel pump run several seconds is necessary before actually starting the vehicle. If not the fuel pump cavitates and the pump will fail.
it is possible but rare mainly it only happens when you have an old pump.
run a fuel pressure test if it dosent match specs then your pump is most likely bad unless you have a fuel leak
here are 2 things that will kill a in tank electric pump 1st dirty fuel filter it has to work harder to push the fuel against a restriction (dirty filter) 2nd low fuel in tank the gas is what keeps the pump cool best bet to make one last is to keep at least 1/4 tank of gas in it and seeing you like to keep your cars low on gas thats probally what did it in
Yes it can happen even to a new pump.
