that my computer from five years ago only has little "storage space" and for a fee he can clear all the data from the past and my computer will work at the right speed and will be useful for more years to come. My question is does anyone know how I can do this myself??? Let me reiterate, I have a five year old computer n its has a lot of downloads etc so consequently it goes slow even thought I have hi speed internet. I would like to clear the hard drive so I can get more use out of it..thank u

The first thing to do is to go in to START > CONTROL PANEL > ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
Go through the list and uninstall anything you no longer need or want.
After that you can do some thorough cleanup of your system by folowing the steps outlined in the link below.
You were right in thinking that this is something you can do yourself without paying fee's for it to be done for you.
My suggestion would be this. Your computer is five years old. If you use it a lot, I believe that with the technological advances of computers and the newest Windows 7 operating system, you may be better off backing up all personal files from your current computer and then place them on a new computer. The repairman is correct in what he can do, however he is still working with a computer that is five years old and could have expensive repairs involved at any time. Power supply, hard drive, etc. You can do this yourself and I will give you the links that will take you through the necessary steps to clean-up your computer and make it faster. I'd bet the RAM on your computer, depending on if it's a laptop or desktop, is not nearly what you need. You also didn't mention what operating system you have installed, I'm guessing Windows XP. If you've never upgraded your computer if it's a laptop, it probably has less than 1GB of RAM, if it's a desktop, probably less than 2GB of RAM. Getting this computer to 4GB of RAM would help greatly. If you want to keep this older computer there's a couple of suggestions I'll make to you that you can have the repairman do for you. The first suggestion is the RAM. Get the maximum of 4GB of RAM installed ( if possible ) in your computer. The second suggestion is if this is a desktop computer, have the repairman replace your hard drive with a larger capacity hard drive. You could likely go to a 500GB hard drive at the minimum, all the way up to 750GB with no problem. This would give you lots of storage space for all your downloaded materials. He could just transfer the files and software from your old hard drive to the new one. Just make sure you have all personal files backed up and all product keys handy in case there would be a problem. Hope this helps you to be able to decide what you wish to do. Good luck and here's the links.

It will be easy, that is, if the computer is a name brand and not something custom built.
