hello im helping a friend fix her computer and could use some help. upon startup i get the above error, ive tried many different things found on google and nothing seems to help. im running xp sp3 on a dell vastro 200, can give more info if needed any help would be very appreciated thank you all
Update:to laurence- that was my first thought but this isnt the case...ive checked the boot device order HDD is set to one. ive tried just about every "simple fix" idea and no results. im thinking it may be a hardware issue but would like to know forsure before i buy a new HDD/system

Check the cables
Data Cable & Power Cable. Disconnect them then reconnect them.
If it doesn't work then
70% possibilities are there that there could be bad sectors in C Drive, If Bad sectors are not there then
It could be Windows fault.
Your doubt is right that it could be hardware error but it can be Operating system issue also. Try re-installing Windows.

maybe you are trying to read a CDrom?
