a disk read error occured press ctr alt del to restart?
dont know why this was deleted. upon start up i get the above message. not sure why its doing this any help would be greatly appreciated. i am running a dell vastro 200 desktop with windows xp sp3. can give more system info if needed

The first thing to do is check for any removable media. Does your computer have a floppy drive, CD/DVD drive? If so, verify that there is no disk in either of these drive types. Then reboot and try again.
Do you have an external USB drive (such as a flash drive (a.k.a. thumb drive, usb memory stick) or external hard drive) connected to your computer? If so, disconnect any usb drives, reboot and try again.
If you try the above and still get the same message, then your hard drive has failed or is corrupted. You could attempt a repair, but I would recommend getting help from a knowledgeable tech if you are not comfortable with this.
