The equation of a curve is y=(x-8)(x-2). Find the gradient of the curve at each of the points where the curve crosses the x-axis.
The parabola intersects x-axis at points x =2 & 8. ( putting y = 0)
Now y = x^2 - 10 x + 16
dy/dx gives 2x -10
Hence gradient at x= 2 is '-6' and at x = 8 it is 6. Note that the axis of the parabola is parallel to y-axis.
