i've got the chance to buy any of the three desktop computers mentioned for around $500, but I want to know which one would be most worth it. the acer has a amd athlon 64 processor, the dell a amd athlon 64 x2 processor, and the emachine a intel pentium 4 processor. which is the most reliable? i plan on using the desktop for eveeeerything (school, work, play, games, ect). any help from some good techies? =)

i have acer. i don't want all those specialties. just something to get the job done and to amuse me when i'm bored.
My husband repairs comps for a living so I hear more than I'd ever want to about how crappy certain brands are. He HATES e-machines. I use an e-machine and love it but have to admit that he's done ALOT of work to keep it in shape!
He routinely makes fun of Acers as well. He also rails on Dell because they are so very specialized that repairing them is next to impossible and extremely expensive.
However, he often sings the praises of athlon processors so I'd say to check out a couple of sites where people review computers and look up the Acer and the Dell.
Definitely go with Dell. Dell is good for its reputation and because it has an Athlon 64 x2 processor which is a lot better than pentium 4 or just athlon 64.
my experience with an emachine desktop was very bad so i wouldnt recommend that one. For the last 7 years, i've purchased about 7 dell desktops and 4 laptops and they are all in good condition even now. I mean they are not all 7 years old, the laptops are all mostly new but the desktops, some are 7 years old and are still doing fine. My roommate used to have one of the acer laptops and she had to get it fixed because it stopped charging, and it hadnt even been an year since she got it. otherwise, she was happy with it, i think....
I have never used an Acer computer, put I have used 2 or 3 eMachines. From my experience eMachine is not a solid computer. From what computer techs have told me was that eMachine uses components that have failed the manufacturer's initial quality control checks. I tried to upgrade the RAM in one from 256MB to 512MB and found out that eMachine had only written the BIOS to support no more than 256MB RAM.
Dell.
Acer computers are the worst, so stay away from them.
A friend of mine had emachine, he hardly used the computer and in 3 years he had to change the Power Supply 3 times since the fan wasn't working!
I changed my power supply once on my 7 year old Dell computer and i'm using it 6-7 hours a day.
Dell---NO way! E machines---NO way! Acer---Oh yeah! E machines absolutely suck! Dell, too many problems, trust me I know. Many people I know have dell's, they also have problems. Acer is an up-and-coming company. They just merged with gateway...may help them, may not. They are becoming a big company, hope it doesn't take away from there quality. As of right now though, go with an Acer...u get a lot of "bang for your buck".
Dell
Out of all those desktops I would say go with Dell because of the Tech Support and Warranty.
ACER! I'm on an Acer now, Dell is horrid! I've had 3 dells die on me just months after purchase...with little use.
nvr an acer, ive had one before and o man how many problems did i have with that P.O.S. scratch that one off ur list buddy. but id say a dell mainly because of there great technical support. they can actually answer ur question and unlike HP, u dont have to pay. but hp is great dont get me wrong, the best of them three.
