Not from my experience. It depends on the type, there are so many types or cichlids that it is impossible to give a definite answer. One thing is that cichlids lose their colour when they are stressed so they may just be regaining colour if they have recently been added they may be settling in. Another thing is that male cichlids' colours brighten up when they feel dominance in the tank.

No. Each species has different color signals. Some turn almost black. I would research whatever species you have to see what color signal they have.
