To answer your question quickly, It depends on the type you buy. You may get away with a single Cichlid if it will not grow too big.
I had a 10 gallon tank for my Albino Red Zebra Cichlid, but because he grew so big I decided to upgrade to a 55 gallon tank. I also added in a Auratus and Convict(also Cichlids) so he wouldn't be alone. They have territorial fights every so often and it would be much worse with a smaller tank. My advice would be to find out how big the fish you want will get and buy a tank accordingly. For a Red Zebra, Petco recommends that you have 30 gallons minimum. Check out their website and search for your fish to get its recommended tank size.
African Cichlids, and just Cichlids in general are very beautiful fish and fun to watch. My Red Zebra and Auratus are very timid, until feeding time, and the Convict is the coolest one of the bunch. They dig, build up gravel, and arrange the tank to suit them. If you do buy more than one Cichlid be sure to provide them with plenty of cover whether it be plants, rocks or decor. Also make sure you buy sand instead of the pebble sized gravel.
10 gal is WAY too small for ordinary African cichlids. Start thing around 50gal for a group of the smaller ones. They are VERY territorial, and need their space.
Only cichlid option for a 10 gal would be Shell Dwellers. They are also crazy aggressive, but they are small.

10 gallon.....
easy..
none.
sorry.
These fish needs lots of space, lots and lots of space only because they are extemily mean fish.
Mean might be the wrong world. They are extremily hierarchical fish and will kill and bully each other until a pecking order is set.
if you don;t give the weak ones room to hide and the mean ones room to call there own the tank becomes a disaster.
this is why they are a popular fish as they have tons of personality but htey need room to operate.
even super docile blue rams need a 20 gallon tank.
if you want a ton of fun for a ten gallon get a sand bottom and places to hide and buy 5 African dwarf frogs.
full of personality and easy to care take off, just feed frozen blood worms..
give them time and you'll hear them quietly singing at night.
just never mix them with fish....

They can live and breed quite happily in a 10gal.
