Did anyone else find it ironic that after getting Don Imus fired from MSNBC, he made a deragatory comment about Epilespy and he's still on air? How was that any different? Why should Imus be without a job and Al Roker is still employed?
Update:Ok, Roker didn't get Imus fired, but he played a hand in getting that result. I'm sickened that this isn't a huge media event that Imus was. Roker said something very cruel and made fun of people with a very serious affliction and then he doens't even have the nads to apoligize, but only clarified what he said? I'm sorry, MSNBC need to make this guy go on air, admit what he said was wrong and offer a sincere apology. And Matt Lauer needs to apologize for snickering too! I'll never watch that show again, ever!

If he's not a hypocrite, he would resign based on comments he made in his blog.
Here it is:
Don Imus April 10, 2007
I cannot tell you how many people have asked me about my thoughts on Don Imus. As a student of broadcasting, I know Don Imus was one of the original "shock jocks". I listened to him growing up in New York City in the late 60's and early 70's.
He is a radio icon.
That said, it is time for him to go.
I, for one, am really tired of the diatribes, the "humor" at others expense, the cruelty that passes for "funny". Don imus isn't the only one doing this, but today he's the one in the hot seat.
What he said was vile and disgusting. It denigrated an entire team and by extension, a community and its pride in a group that had excelled.
This controversy started and grew during the week. At first under the radar, we even had Don's wife, Deidre, on the program, talking about "green" cleaning. I thought she was so good, I wanted to talk to her about a television program for my production company.
Don and his wife have done a lot of good things. Raising money for charity, including a ranch for children suffereing from cancer and blood disorders.
Yet, Don Imus needs to be fired for what he said. And while we're at it,his producer, Bernard McGurk needs to be canned as well. McGurk is just as guilty, often egging Imus on.
The "I'm a good person who said a bad thing" apology doesn't cut it. At least he didn't try to weasel out of this by hiding behind alcohol or drug abuse. Still, he said it and a two week suspension doesn't cut it. It is, at best a slap on the wrist. A vacation. Nothing.
The general manager of Cartoon Network resigned after a publicity stunt went wrong and cause d a panic in Boston. He did the right thing. Don Imus should do the right thing and resign. Not talk about taking a two week suspension with dignity. I don't think Don Imus gets it.
After watching and lsitening to him this morning during an interview with Matt Lauer, Don Imus doesn't get it. Maybe it's being stuck in a studio for 35 years or being stuck in the 1980's. Either way, it's obvious that he needs to move on. Citing "context within a comedy show" is not an exscuse.
He has to take his punishment and start over. Guess what? He'll get re-hired and we'll go on like nothing happened. CBS Radio and NBC News needs to remove Don Imus from the airwaves. That is what needs to happen. Otherwise, it just looks like profits and ratings rule over decency and justice.
Until next time,
Al
Well, I am a huge supporter of free speech, I am quite angry that Al Roker is still on the air simply because he took pride in the fact that he was one of the people who helped get Don Imus fired. He blogged day after day and also went to NBC management and voiced his opinions in getting Don Imus so he shoudl live with the consquences that people can be fired for a simple joke, look up the blogs and you cna read that he said humor is not an excuse, look up the blogs and now you can insert Roker everytime Imus is mentioned. It is a double standard and it is wrong, what Roker said was a lot more offensive then Imus, Imus made a tonuge in cheek joke that wasnt bad, Roker made fun of something that kills people, why is it that he hasnt even given a real apology? Imus gave a sincere apology, meanwhile Roker basically said no I was making fun of epilepsy when he clearly was, why is it okay for him to make "insenstive" jokes not Imus? Is it because of race, in my eyes, yes, it is clear proof of a double standard, people need to get up in arms, Roker said he doesnt want people who make jokes like this to have jobs so he should lose his, he shoudl live by his own rules that he helped push.
It is ironic, and a horrible injustice that Roker has not received ANY attention for this at all. I am a big believer of free speech. I do not feel Imus should have been fired, but if you are going to hold Imus to these standards, then Roker must be held accountable too. There cannot be a double standard.
Imus was very outspoken to the fact that Imus should be fired. Then he goes and says what he does - It is just as bad, In fact I think it is even worse than what Imus had said, and here are three reasons why:
1. Imus owned up to his mistake. He was sincere in his apology and admitted he was wrong with his comments. Al on the other hand cowardly denied that he was making fun of people with a horrible affliction, blatantly lying on national TV by saying thathe was not speaking about epilepsy but about the Olympic logo. What other rationale could you possibly give for the line “rolling on the ground shaking?” That sure seems to equate to a joke about epilepsy.
2. Imus’ job is to be controversial and provide cutting edge humor to his listeners. Roker on the other hand is tasked with telling me whether or not I should bring my umbrella to work. Not only did he make a stupid remark, but he overstepped his job description to do so.
3. Imus has never, to my knowledge called for someone’s head over a controversial comment; in fact he is a big advocate of freedom of speech (something Al obviously does not believe in).
There is a horrible double standard in this country as to who can say what, when they can say it, and in what context. It seems to be perfectly fine for Al Sharpton to make fun of Jews, or Al Roker to make fun of someone with an uncontrolable disease. But God forbid someone makes a tasteless remark about blacks. It is very convenient to stand up and voice your opinion when you are the target of a joke (although I do not believe Sharpton or Roker were in reality the least bit offended or affected by Imus - can we say attention whores), but if you do stand up to that, then you cannot coward into a corner and catagorigly deny it when you do the same asinine thing.
Al Roker was not responsible for Imus' firing, however, he did make himself out to be a hero and a crusader in support of CBS and NBC's decision to let Imus go. In Roker's online blog he says "consider having to explain to your daughter why someone would call a person they didn't know, a ‘nappy headed ho’.” Well Al, consider having to explain to your daughter why someone made fun of her for “rolling around on the floor shaking.”
My niece has epilepsy and I don't appreciate remarks made about the illness. I think every family needs an apology for the remarks Al Roker made.
Roker has said things on the air before that he should have had to answer to----he insults people all the time on the "Today" show. Lots of it is said under his breath---but if you listen closely--you will hear him. It always is followed by a huge laugh and they quickly cut away fom him.
I think it is time for him to put an end to all his "bull".
How'd he get Imus fired? I am in no way, shape, or form pro-derogatory comments, but I don't think Imus should have been fired. This is America, the land of free speech and part of that includes putting up with crap that we don't agree with and things that offend us. We can't pick or choose what things should be allowed to be said and we can't censor somethings because it's not politically correct. I don't want to offend anyone, but freedom of speech is important too. If we don't defend it, it can go away.
Babbies? Al Roker eats babbies? Oh so tasty especilly with a good rub first. Yes, the rumor is true.
He should be fired from his job of making stupid jokes and telling the rubes of America the weather, Sharpton should be fired from his job of exploiting his race and his "radio show", Jesse Jackson should be fired from his job of, well, what the hell is his job?
He will not be fired because he will have the backing of the latter two loud mouth hypocrites. I am just waiting until he starts joking about people with cancer, diabetes, and aids.
I would write his bosses and him for a on air apology at least.
I hadn't heard, but with a daughter that had epilepsy, I do find it offending.
Well last time I checked epilespy isn't a race, and he didn't call it "nappy headed hoes"
