x^4-8x^2+6=0
What is the question? Assuming you want to solve for x
let z = x²
z² – 8z + 6 = 0
quadratic equation:
to solve ax² + bx + c = 0
x = [–b ±√(b²–4ac)] / 2a
z = [8 ±√(64–24)] / 2
z = [8 ±√40] / 2
z = [8 ± 2√10] / 2
z = 4 ± √10
now plug x back in
x² = 4+√10, 4–√10
x = ± √(4+√10), ± √(4–√10)
numerically that is
x = ±2.676, ±0.9153
check the answers by plugging them back in the original equation.
you can do that.
(x²)² - 8(x²) + 6 = 0
((x²) - 4)² - 10 = 0
((x²) - 4)² = 10
x² - 4 = ±â10
x² = 4 ± â10
x = ±â(4 ± â10)
x = â(4 - â10), â(4 + â10), -â(4 - â10), -â(4 + â10)
Hi Kay Kay
Have you tried using the quadratic formula? The equation can not be solved by simple factoring.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more help. I'm on YM or by email.
Best of luck.
