Scientists have recently developed bacteria that can use amino acids beyond the traditional twenty. Speculate on what affect these additional amino acids might have on the bacteria’s proteins.
Update:*** this isn't homework for a grade- it's for a study guide that isn't going to be graded! i just can't find the answer anywhere in my book!

It probably isn't in your book. Probably they want you to research and/or speculate what might happen. What you need to know is that there are different categories of amino acids. All amino acids have a basic structure, but they have unique side chains that give them particular chemical properties. These properties get incorporated into the proteins they make up. Some amino acids are similiar to each other. Serine and Threonine for example are very similiar to each other. Some amino acids like water, some don't etc... Sooo if you had different amino acids, there might be different types of protein structures that could be formed that had never been formed before.... I've got you started.... If a bacteria had the potential to make proteins that had never been made before, it might be able to make a protein that could.......
