It also provides power for other electrical devices, and recharges the Battery. However, it is not capable of providing enough power under all circumstances, during which times the Battery serves as a reserve.
well, the alternator allows the battery to stay charged. it doesn't do any of the options listed without the help of something else. the battery can run accessories while the engine is off until the battery dies. the alternator will not recharge it unless the car is running.
It isn't to start the engine. that is the starter's job.
And not only in an emergency cause you need it to drive.
I would have to say to run the engine once started. The car won't last very long without the alternator.
start by pulling the alternator off and taking it down to your local parts store and have it tested for output. an alternator isnt always completely dead, but when its output falls too low it wont charge the battery enough to overcome the amount of current being drawn from the battery. you might have a dead regulator, assuming an externally mounted regulator. you might have a bad battery as well. you can have the battery tested at the same place you have the alternator tested. one more thing, you might have a short somewhere that is causing a drain on the electrical system. best that you find it before it causes more serious problems. look for insulation around the wires that looks deformed, and follow that wire each way.
None of the above, it's purpose is to charge the battery. The battery powers the electrical circuits to do all those other things and the alternator puts the power back into the battery.
the answer is ,to run engine, once started, you don't need the battery once engine is started, you can take it out of the car,and drive it without a battery,as long as alternator is good, hope that helps.
alternator provides electrical power to the battery where it stores it til its needed.... your motor will run with out it but only for a short time when the motor is off your using the battery.... and as for the emergency its not any good for anything

to charge the battery after starting the car and to feed the accessories as needed. this includes the ignition system indirectly through the battery.
a, generating sufficient power to charge the battery back up and supply power to any consumers that are on.
none of the above....the purpose of an alternator is to MAINTAIN the charged state of a battery....
