I'm learning about the dative and accusative cases at school and i was wondering what the correct sentence is in german.
The lamp is hanging above the bed = Die Lampe Hangt uber das bett or uber dem Bett? Should it be in the dat or acc case?
Update:I knew it!!! THANK U so much. I put 'dem' as the answer ,but when my teacher was marking it, she said it was in the accusative case(das). She is always making mistakes! grrr

Think about it in English first:
The lamp (Subj) is hanging (verb) above (preposition) the bed (object of the preposition.)
Therefore, the sentence would be correctly:
Die Lampe hängt über dem Bett
:)
Die Lampe hängt über dem Bett.
I can assure you that the answers already given are correct, it is "über dem Bett".
Since all question words require the use of a certain case, you can easily determine the case in such contexts by calling to your mind the question word that you would use, in this case it's "wo" (where) which requires the dative.
Die Lampe hängt über dem Bett - because it's stationary.
I can illustrate this better with the train and the station:
1. The train passes the station = Der Zug fährt an den Bahnhof vorbei = accusative
2. The train stops at the station = Der Zug hält am Bahnhof an = dative
The lamp Hangt about that bed or above the bed?
SHOULD BE ::::::::::Die Lampe hängt über dem Bett
It should be dative. I guess you've learned in school what the questions are to find the case, such as:
Nominative: Who/What ?
Genitive: Whose ?
Dative: Whom ?
Accusative: What ?
The correct form is "Die Lampe hängt über dem Bett."
