I'm writing a paper on a few countries religions. Its a short essay and one of them is Greece. I've looked their religion up in my World History book but couldn't find what it was. It was all about the love of Philosophy. I was wondering if Philosophy was a form of their religion? If not then could you post a website that would be helpful? Thank you so much!
Update:OMG Thank you! I totally forgot about Greek Mythology! I was obssesed with it for awhile! Ugh. I'm such a blonde at times. Thanks again.

From what I know, the Ancient Greek religion was more focused on human learning than an afterlife. So I would say, yes.
Try http://www.theoi.com/ for myths about gods, heroes, and monsters.
Well the Greeks had a polytheistic faith, and that is easy to find. Read some Ancient Greek poetry. Read a little from the Ancient Greek Lyric Poets and Homeric Hymns. They are short, you can find them on the internet, and they talk about the gods. You can also read some plays. Try Sophocles and Euripides, they will give you an idea about how diversely the Greeks regarded the gods.
But you really are onto something with Philosophy. Deep in Greek religion was philosophy. Pythagoreanism is a greek philosophy what believe perfection and therefor God was in Mathematics. In an almost monotheistic way. They also abstained from eating beans, believing they were impure.
Plato and Socrates believed in Monism, the belief that their was one perfect entity, and everything is an emanation of that perfection. Bottom line is that Philosophy was deeply rooted in Greek religion, and is sadly, often overlooked. You could write an essay about the 12 Olympians and it would be OK. But if you write about how Philosophy is rooted in Greco Paganism, you could write a GREAT essay. But it would be more challenging. E-mail me if you want any help. [email protected]
Answer: As a modern-day Hellenic Polytheist, I can assure you that the religion was NOT all about the love of Philosophy. Yes, the Greek philosophers, such as Pythagoras and Plato were very important to understanding the culture and religion, but the are not the sole source of information on the subject.
For more information on Hellenic Reconstructionism (which strives to bring the ancient Greek Religion into the modern era while preserving the beauty and cohesion of the religion) I would actually recommend getting a book titled: "KHARIS: Hellenic Polytheism Explored"
by Sarah Kate Istra Winter.
Hellesismos are modern practitioners of Ancient Greek gods.
Philsophy was the evelvation of the soul. The soul was mind, body and heart to the Greeks. While philosophy played into religion, it was not a religion.
Google Greek paganism and you should get some stuff.
Hi hun;
Sweetheart read the Greek myths. Read about the God's and Goddesses. That was the Greek religion for thousands of years.
