Knowing how most of these charities work, I just feel bad for the animals and the celebrities that are conned into doing the commercials. I hate animal cruelty, but I also despise the way most charities operate.
I am a huge lover of animals. I own four dogs, two rabbits and two cats. Every once in a while a stray will come along and we take them in and care for them until the owner or a home for them can be found. I give to the ASPCA, and help my local animal shelters with donations. So basically I am no stranger to the horrors of animal abuse that is out there. And I can assure you, every time one of those commercials come on I weep like a child. I never change the channel, though, because I feel that watching them and feeling those emotions only keeps me focused on trying to keep on fighting the good fight, and help as many animals in need that I can.
I never give money to charities anymore, I want to help but none of them can be trusted because charities these days are almost profit-making ventures, none of the major ones are what I would call "true" charities and they compete with each other like crazy.
You also need to be aware of the things they don't tell you; when you give money to a cancer research charity the chances are some of your money will be used in animal experimentation and vivisection; I am not entirely against the practice but there is not one single animal research laboratory anywhere treats it's animals in a humane way or employs properly trained staff. It's a very dirty business and no charity will freely admit to being involved in it.
Fast Forward with Tivo, I don't really watch tv live anymore.
Mostly I get annoyed that whichever organization is running the commercial is wasting money it could be using to actually help animals on running prime-time commercials, so it can get more money to use on advertising.
The mail is worse however. My grandmother recently died and we get nothing but beg letters from every animal rights and humane society trying to get money out of a dead woman. Easily 6-10 a month, even after we have repeatedly informed them she has died and we have no interest in their mailings. Talk about wasting money that could be used to help animals.
I typically will get up and do something else, or change the channel during...
Or sit and bawl like a baby. ><
I WISH I could help. But I already am doing a lot in my hometown with the local shelters and rescue groups.. And then with all my own pets.. I don't have the funds to donate everytime I see one of those.. But me and my mother have before in the past..
I get disgusted that they put on these videos to pull on your heart strings to get a donation. It has been proven time and time again that PETA people are involved in this abuse. It sounds here like allot of people are falling for it.
I wish that I had the money to do something but since i don't I remind myself that I saved my dog from abuse and change the channel.
they play on sympathy and always show the worst of the worst trying to get people to donate so i just usually find something else to watch until its over
I change the channel instantly.
i feel very sad and depressed.. but am afraid i don't really do anything..
i can't afford to call and donate..
