I almost feel that being a temp/contractor is ruining my chances of becoming a permanent employee. I am in the HR industry as a Corporate Recruiter and I have been working for various companies through temp/staffing agencies for the last 4 years doing short term contracts. Finding a regular full time position is almost extinct and very competitive. This is the reason I have been doing contracting. Also, HR doesn't make money for a company so many large companies only hire Recruiters when they are experiencing a lot of growth, turn over etc. They call on temp services/staffing agencies when they need a Recruiter. This has been great for me in some ways because I have had the experience to work for some Fortune 500 companies. But many of my past employers including my current one have said to me that they wish they could keep me but they can't afford to pay the agency fee that they have to pay in order to convert me from contractor to full time so they end up not and hiring someone outside of the agency world. Is there a way to get around a company paying a fee to convert a temp?

The fee to convert a temp to permanent goes down the longer the temp works for the company so, while a popular excuse, it's not really accurate. While working as a temp however, you can normally apply for internal positions in the company and I have taken advantage of that when I was working as a temp and did get permanent positions because the positions never were posted outside the company. You might want to think about what other position you would take in a company you like instead of HR and then wait for a permanent HR position to open once you are on permanent.
