Okay, I am going to be going to Mexico to study abroad this August. I have been taking Spanish for over 4 years.... but I hardly have anything to show for it! My spanish is horrible and it happens to be my one passion. I know that going to a country where that is the mother language is the best way to learn it... but what can I do in the states to better prepare myself? I am a college student taking Spanish classes... but they are a joke. Any computer programs I could buy.... or anything!?

What I do is communicate with native speakers - I ask them translation-questions, listen to their pronunciation, y allow them to correct me as we talk.
Also, I watch Spanish shows. Whether it´s on youtube, such as http://www.youtube.com/IBEL44 ,or on the TV, i get my dose of Spanish media. This really enhances your listening and comprehending skills.
Since, you can't really talk back to a TV, also listen to some Spanish music. Listen to the songs you like (find a new favorite artist), read the lyrics while you're listening, and sing along! This will also help you with your comprehension, but most importantly your pronunciation.
Have fun in México!
Congratulations! I am very jealous. I know that when I studied Spanish, I found that the best way to learn was by immersion. The more you hear, see, and speak the language, the more fluent you will become. Trust me, that was almost three decades ago! Does your university have a language lab? If so, use it several times a day. Advertise for a tutor. Offer to babysit for any hispanic friend's child in exchange for free tutoring. Go to the ethnic market and the traditional ethnic restaurant and vow to only use Spanish. Good luck and have the trip of a lifetime!

I think it is pretty good (my native language is Spanish). Look at all of the links on the page, there are some with sound as well.
Watch as much Spanish TV as you can, turn the close-captioning on but only read it when you don't understand.
Try speaking only in Spanish with another Spanish-speaking person. Don't be afraid to make mistakes !
These things helped me when I was learning English.
Have fun on your trip!
I've studied spanish and french. What helped me more than anything in class is listening to native speakers. I recommend listening to spanish music, watch spanish movies (try it without subtitles) and maybe try to find a spanish-language radio broadcast. Maybe online. I sometimes listen to radio france international to brush up my french. You can probably find the same sort of thing in spanish.
Don't worry thats natural, once you're in Mexico you'll start to remember your classes and get used to it, one friend of mine came to Mexico 9 months ago, and she also was worried about the language, she knew it but she wasn't confident now she speaks almost perfect spanish no kidding she have improved a lot since she made some friends and started talking and listening.
where are u going?
if you need someone to practice your spanish add me, or let me know i would be pleased :P
a good way to learn spanish and practice it is actually watching spanish channels. eventhough you are not engaged in a conversation, you are listening to it spoken by a few people.
good luck!
