Hi, ok so I ride english but my friends been teaching me a bit of western on her horse as well. Next lesson she's going to introduce me to a barrel course for the first time. I'm just wondering how do you run a pattern? I know there is three barrels but what order do you take them in?
Thanks in advance :)
Update:Hey thanks, sorry I should have mentioned I'm blind so videos or pics are no use.

A horse and rider attempt to complete a clover-leaf pattern around 3 preset barrels in the fastest time. You can start either from the left or right barrel. If you start from the right you turn the barrel from the inside or your left hand side, then go towards the 2nd barrel and repeat what you did at the first barrel except turning the barrel on the left hand side. Then go towards your final barrel and turn it from the right side.
If you start from the left you do the same thing just trun the barrel the different way: 1st-left turn. 2nd-right turn. 3rd- right turn. It all depends on which way your horse is better at turing. If it's easier for it to do right hand turns start on the left so it does two right hand and one left hand turns, and if it's easier for it to do left hand turns start from the right so you have two lefts and one right. Sorry this may be kind of confusing but it's easier to show with a visual so i'll show you that to.
On the left is starting from the left side and on the right is starting from the right side: http://lflc.homestead.com/files/cloverleaf_barrels...
Here's a video that kind of teaches you how to barrel race:

Good luck trying this out and have fun!!
The barrel course is three barrels in the shape of a triangle. Your start by running up to the bottom right barrel and doing a right turn around it. Then you go straight across to the bottom left barrel but do a left turn, so you'll be coming to the barrel from the opposite side. Then go diagonally to the top barrel and do a left turn around it then run to the gate. You could also do this by starting with the bottom left barrel, then going to the bottom right, then the top. Hope this helped! :)
If your horse if left handed you would take the pattern that would let you take two lefts and one right or visa versa that would give you a little edge.
You can go right-left-left, or Left-right -right. So you could go to either barrel first.
