Becoming a professional musician-General questions?

I'm a Junior in High school. Although this will definitely sound like the cliche teenaged girl that wants to be a singer story, I've been singing all my life. I've never been in a band (although I've gotten offers, they've never played music I enjoyed) I'm planning on going to Columbia College in Chicago and majoring in music. But as I've heard, majoring in music may not be the best idea in case my dream falls through. But there's only two things I can picture myself doing as a career. And those are writing and singing. Singing is definitely my #1. I've also been in choir my whole life and took vocal lessons, so I'm not exactly a novice.

Anyways, I know a lot of becoming a musician is by chance and, unfortunately, how "marketable" you are.

I don't have a specific question exactly, I would just like some information on it (Maybe by musicians themselves?) I don't care MUCH about income. I kind of pictured myself as low-income anyways. I guess my real fear is that the music I like and the lyrics I believe in are not in with the "mainstream" music. I never ever write songs like Katy Perry or Niki Minaj *Snicker*. I'm more alternative. So I'm not sure how marketable in that way I'll be.

Any advice? I greatly appreciate it :)
