It is based on something in the old testament.
And modern Christians totally ignore that for the most part...so I think you are good.
In Genesis 9: 3,4 "Every moving animal that is alive may serve as food for you. As in the case of green vegetation, I do give it all to you. Only flesh with its soul - it's blood - you must not eat."
Leviticus17: 11,12 "The soul of the flesh is in the blood, and I myself have put it upon the altar for you to make atonement for your souls, because it is the blood that makes atonement by the soul in it. That is why I have said to the sons of Israel: " No soul of you must eat blood and no alien resident who is residing as an alien in your midst should eat blood."
In a hospital, when a patient cannot eat through his mouth, he is fed intravenously. Now, would a person who accepted a blood transfusion really be obeying the command to "keep abstaining from blood? Acts 15:29 To use a comparison consider a man who is told by is doctor that he must abstain from alcohol. Would he be obedient if he quit drinking alcohol but had it transfused into his veins? Something to think about. All true Christians have the hope of a resurrection and that is what keeps them from abstaining blood. Blood transfusions had not been developed when the Bible was written, so it says nothing about them.
Jehovah's Witnesses interpret the Old Testament dietary taboo against eating blood to mean that medical transfusions are forbidden.
What a coincidence Eliza, that's something I've also considered Eliza, were they doing blood transfusions when the bible was written? No? Then there's your answer. Gotta catch the bus!

Why would it be a sin to SAVE A HUMAN LIFE?????
The logic is not with this one. Quit letting a book do your thinking for you; use common sense!
I do not believe blood transfusions are mentioned in the bible.
Blood is sacred. Jehovah God wanted us to respect and cherish blood, it represents our life. When permitting Noah to eat meat he said "only flesh with it's soul-it's blood- you must not eat." (Genisis 9:4) And then he established the commandments and mosaic law.(Leviticus 17:14) states not to eat or ingest blood because it represents life and the gift of life Jehovah gave us. He would rather us poor blood into the dirt and cover it with dust than to ingest it. God wants us to abstain from ingesting blood! Imagine if a doctor told an alcoholic to abstain from alcohol because it would mean death. The doctor would not say "but it's okay to inject it in your veins." No, we must abstain from what God says to abstain from, and if we don't then we are compromising our God-fearing integrity.
If it's true that blood is the life of a man, "Greater love hath no man than this: that he lay down his life for his friends." Go ahead and donate.
the bible says the earth is flat, donkeys can talk, and people can live in the stomachs of whales
its the last place any sane or rational person would look for medical advice
But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. -- Genesis 9:4
And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people. For the life of the flesh is in the blood. ... Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood. ... And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off. -- Leviticus 17:10-14
