I've noticed lately my moods have been changing in extremes. I read a book on bipolarity and it's symptoms, but I'm also reading a book on the female brain. On one hand, I match most of the symptoms of being bipolar, but the brain book explains the shift in hormones and why I may be on top of the world on day, and down in the dumps the next. Is there a way to differentiate or do I just have to wait until I'm older to find out?

Real good question... and I unfortunately can't giveyou a definitive answer from experience because I'm male.
Bipolar disorders *do* tend to cycle fairly slowly (multi-days and multi-weeks as opposed to daily - except in times of psychosis)... but that's not much of a guide, because there are a lot of people "out there" with bipolar conditions whose "chemical moods" change so constantly and rapidly that it can make even a doctor's head spin.
You owe it to yourself to find a good shrink (or better yet, a mood disorders clinic) so you can get a handle on this.
Take it from me. It nearly destroeyd my life, and it also nearly destroyed my mum's life. We're both just fine, but oinly because we had the info we needed and *acted* on it.
Being Bi Polar isn't just mood swings. Your mood won't change dramatically from day to day. For months you will feel depressed/mad/rage. Then you'll be happy for a few weeks and go into a "manic mode". You may be very productive and get everything done in an instant such as cleaning your whole house. Or you may carelessly spend money. It varies but all in all you go on a rampage of strange behavior. You don't think about the consequences of things. Your age has a lot to do with it as well. If you're young then I'd wait. If you're around 23-35 and you have most of these symptoms then I'd get it checked out. If it's just the moods you may just be a moody person.
Bipolar is more than mood swings and the cycles do not happen on a day to day basis.
People confuse mood with emotion..... mood affects everything about you. Your energy level, sleep patterns, appetite, emotional response (which emotions you feel and how strongly), your judgment, sexual appetite, etc....... Bipolar is not about being happy one minute then sad the next then mad, that is just having emotions..... The mood swings in Bipolar last a very long time, weeks to months to years and the average Bipolar only swings once or twice a year.
People never never understand the true severity of bipolar disorder. They also do not understand that for an "episode" to be considered Bipolar it has to last all day every day for a week....... That's the minimum, in reality the episodes last for weeks or months or even years. There are cases where a person can have more than one or two episodes a year but it is really rare. There is such a thing as Ultradian cycling in which you cycle multiple times in a day but it is exceptionally rare and there are questiona about whether it is actually Bipolar but instead Borderline PD. Also you HAVE TO HAVE the mania (or hypomania) for it to be bipolar. Without mania it is just recurring depression.
The mood swings in Bipolar do not usually have a trigger. They come and go very randomly...... If someone with Bipolar is depressed or manic there is nothing you can do to bring them out of their mood short of medication.....
This is what Bipolar is like for me.
Depression- to tired to get out of bed, shower, brush your teeth..... lie in bed and stare at the ceiling for days at a time, crying a lot, feelings of guilt, and self loathing, may be suicidal but are too tired to even consider planning it, sleep 16 hours a day or more, eating too much or not enough. I get very paranoid and think that people are staring at me and laughing. I feel like people know what I'm thinking.
Manic - over the moon happy or filled with uncontrollable rage, hypersexual (like masturbating 10 times a day or sleeping with numerous men, strangers, your cousin.......decide you are bi because then there are twice as many people to have sex with, decide you are into BDSM and contract to be someones slave for a week), spending your mortgage money on african violets (or some other useless things), driving your car 120 mph, grandiose thoughts (like thinking you can put a new furnace in your house by yourself, or thinking that you can be the president), quitting your job because you are buying lottery tickets with your last paycheck and you know you will win...... only sleep 2 or 3 hours a night and feel completely rested, can't concentrate, racing thoughts (it sounds like 50 people in your head all talking at the same time), talk really fast and loud because your mouth can't keep up with our mind. Drug or alcohol abuse is common.
Again, this has to last for a minimum of a week to be considered a bipolar episode. Everyone with Bipolar is a little different and at the severe end it includes hallucinations and delusions.
I'm like that too, except it doesn't just change daily for me - it can even change hourly. I can feel like complete crap one hour, and the next I'm in an amazing mood.
I hate to not really help, but I've had the same problem and I'm not sure if it's normal. I've looked over the diagnostics of bipolar and I'm not sure if I have it, but I guess it's possible.
On the other hand it could be 100% normal.
I'm going to guess it is just a hormonal change. Bipolar symptoms tend to be on the extreme side and you show aggressive anger. But if you're too worried I would go to your family doctor.
i wouldnt say your bipolar
how often do your moods shift? bipolar often happens in around 2 week periods per mood but it can vary to 1-2 days to a months at a time
and bi polar people generally wouldnt recognise something is wrong with them "bipolar" wise
and seeing as you notice your moods changing, it may be a very mild form or hormones
so im assuming its probably hormones
maybe go to a doctor? they can help
lolts of people think they r bipolar but they dont know
