I would say that for overall ownership costs, they are about the same. The M3 is a little on the steep side in maintenance but so is a Supra. Reliability is stellar on both but the Supra is turbocharged and you don't really know how the previous owner treated it. I would take an abused M3 over an abused Supra anyday. Also, the E36 could be had for less coinage than the Supra TT. You really can't go wrong with a good example of either car but I would take the M3. That says a lot considering I would usually take a Toyota in a comparison. If you're looking at an N/A Supra, I would still take the M3 eventhough the N/A Supra would probably be a little more reliable.
