currently i have a pair of bose 201, and planning to replace it with 301. is there a significant difference between the quality of the sound between the two?
The 301 is not a big improvement from the 201; I'd say not worth the money.
If you really want to increase sound quality, consider buying new speakers (either new or vintage) from brands like:
Vintage: Rectilinear, KLH, Advent, DCM, AR (Acoustic Research), JBL, Harmon Kardon, Genesis Physics (NOT Genesis media labs)
New: Definitive Technology, Cambridge Soundworks Model Six, Bowers and Wilkins (B&W)
Newer speakers will most likely be less expensive than vintage speakers, although some vintage speakers may require maintenence to sound their best (don't worry, it usually costs no more than $30 to fix them, or no more than $10 if the woofers are not made of foam; additionally, some vintage speakers are still working perfectly without maintenance).
