If you are VERY VERY VERY careful with the laptop it can last as long as a desktop. If you are looking for high performance, get a desktop. If you are looking for something for school or portability, obviously get a laptop. Just more info, Desktops are much better for gaming than laptops.
It depends completely what you want to do with it. If you mostly want to use the computer in one place, get a desktop. If you want to play games, get a desktop. If you want a lot of power for your money, get a desktop. If you want something for browsing the internet, email, and word processing, and you are on the go a lot, and you don't mind paying 2-3 times more for the same performance, then get a laptop.
A desktop will always last longer, since there is more room inside the case for heat dissipation (less chance of burning out a Hard Drive or CPU), and all of the components are easily replaceable/upgradable, so if something does go wrong, you can easily fix or replace only that part. If something breaks in a laptop, you pretty much have to replace the whole thing, since all the components are so tightly integrated.
well, I have a desktop computer at home and it has quite a large screen and windows e.t.c. It is an HP L1940T. I watch movies and TV shows on it all the time, so I think a desktop is good for that. The dell studio 15 has quite a large screen already, so you could keep that for watching movies and then get a desktop computer with Microsoft Office on it. However, I am sure you would be able to connect your laptop with a desktop if that would be better. Hope that helps xx
no, they are about the same life span now because technology has made these things last forever, i still know people that have laptops that apple first made 15 years ago that STILL WORK! but overall get a laptop because you can use it anywhere you like and its much easier and now since schools are opening you can find some very good deals on them.
one advantage to a desktop computer is that you can upgrade the components inside, easy because unlike a laptop everything is speared out and you can find it easy.
I say yes because it's possible to upgrade or replace desktop parts easily, but on laptops it is impossible or extremely hard to change some parts. I'm not sure about the life span of both if you don't consider replacing parts, however.
It will, because is bigger, but if you take good care of a laptop it might last you just as long as a desktop. except for the battery that will last only about 3 years.

Yes. The memory and Hard Drive and the processor will be better in a desk top and last longer.
