Once you're 17.5 years of age, but younger than 18, you can take the written test and not need to go through a driving school.
If you pass the test, you get your permit. With this permit you're legally allowed to drive BUT you have to have an adult, age 25 or older with a valid driver's license. And of course, you must have the permit with you when you're driving.
