For a person to lose 1 pound in a day they would need to burn off 3500 calories. When Michael Phelps was in training for the Olympics he was said to be burning around 10,000 calories per day. Thus, If one day he only ate 6500 calories he would lose a pound. Many serious athletes have the problem of not consuming enough calories while training and compeating and end up losing more then 1 pound per day.
It depends on your metabolism. If I stop eating cake and cookies and don't snack between meals, I tend to lose about a pound a day. I usually give up cake and cookies for Lent, but have to start eating them again after around 4 weeks because I'm losing too much weight. Other people can't lose weight whatever they try.
