Why do you want to connect the computers? You can connect them with a network cable (google Ethernet cable), but the computers will still behave the same.
If you want to see the same screen and work on the project together, the answer is "sort of". You can use a program like VNC or Remote Desktop so one computer can view and control the other computer's screen, but you don't need to connect the computers together; you just need to both be on the Internet.
There are also some programs (like Google Wave, I'm not sure what else) that allow multiple people to work on the same project at the same time, but they're a lot newer and honestly I haven't really used them before.
