Can regular exercise replace antidepressants?

I have recently weaned myself off antidepressants that I was on for the past 2 years. The negative side effects were far too great, and I was starting to feel like a complete stranger to myself.

I'm looking for some things I can do now in the place of taking antidepressants, as depression is an on-going problem for me. I was diagnosed two years ago, but really, I've been suffering from it since my early teens.

Is exercise a good substitute? If so, how much, and what kind of exercise? Are there any other natural remedies (vitamin supplements, etc.) to help control depression?

Thanks in advance!
