Yes vegetarians can use mascara. some make up is made from unused animals. Most lipsticks are used from fish scales. Mascara and eyeliner are not used from animals and neither is foundation. Lip gloss is made from fish scales and unwanted fat from animals, but there's no bacteria on it.
I would imagine since you are a vegetarian for animal rights that you are also against animal testing. A lot of brands animal test frequently, so you may want to think about the process of how the product was made rather than what's in it?
As for what's in mascara, I dont have a clue, but I have heard that lipstick contains fish scales.
Remember to look for one that says no animal testing. And a google search should be able to tell you what ingredients to look out for. I'd go to a organic/whole foods store and get all natural mascara from there...
You are a little over there, sweatie. Lipstick is from whale oil. As for mascara, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Just check out the ingrediants to it and then google them to see what they are.
I found the following link. Looks like Avon does not test their products on animals.
Go to Vegan Essentials for your make-up, if you're concerned:

(You'll have to click on "Cosmetics" at that link.)
Obviously, vegan cosmetics contain absolutely no animal products and...naturally...would never be tested on animals, either.
Edited to add:
Here's the ingredient list for one of the vegan mascaras:
Ingredients: Water, mineral wax, stearic acid (vegetable source), vegetable glycerin, glyceryl stearate, jojoba seed oil, rice bran wax, acacia senegal gum, cyclopentasiloxane (from silica), fragrance (essence of almond and vanilla), arginine, aloe leaf juice, hectorit (from clay), panthenol, tocopherol, biotin
i am a consultant w/ Mary Kay and we do not do animal testing...you can also look up the products ingredients on the website.
yes, but check the label if unsure.
