lets say you gain a whole bunch of muscle and then you get lazy, do you ever lose your muscle or does it just get "over powered" by fat. Like your muscle is there, you just can't see it because of the fat?

Yes if you don't keep up with your working out then you will eventually lose your muscle mass.
Yes, you lose the muscle. It takes physical activity to build and maintain muscles and if you don't keep it up the muscle cells basically die off and disappear. It's not just that they get hidden by fat, though you may also gain some fat over whatever muscles you have.
You muscles that you took so long to get ripped will atrophy. Meaning, yes..they get smaller and smaller until right around the point where they are big enough to handle everyday tasks.
And when I lost my muscles, I gained a ton of fat. I think mainly because I was eating alot because of the calories I needed to sustain my build. When I quit lifting, I kept my appetite. Booom!! Booom!! Booom!! I turned into the poster boy for chili cheese dogs.
They atrophy at a rate of 3% a day in the bedridden. Fact.
