Many dealers will take broken-down trade-ins on NEW cars. Be patient and keep asking. Occasionally they will advertise that they'll give $1000 on anything with 4 wheels, or something similar. Visit a dealer and ask. It's tough to find deals like this on used cars, though.
Where were you and your broke down car when the federal governement was giving away free money for them? It's too late for that now sister girlfriend.
The dealer is looking at how quickly they can turn your car around, either by selling it on their used car lot or by selling it along with a bunch of other junk cars at an auction. If they can't unload it, they wont take it. However, if it still runs you may have a shot.
Some places like CarMax will give you a free estimate of what your car is worth. If all else fails, you can also sell it to a scrap yard that will pay for the parts and the recyclable materials.
