I don't have money for a mechanic and I'd like to try and fix this myself. I have a 97 Cadillac deville. It backfires when I start it, white smoke is coming from tailpipes, but it smells like gas and not coolant. I checked the coolant and it is perfectly clear and so is the oil. It shakes when I rev it up,but it idles fine. If you're going to tell me to take it to a mechanic than please don't answer.

White smoke almost always means steam, most often caused by coolant in the combustion chambers. The cause for that is usually a cracked head, or a problem with a head gasket or intake gasket.
The gas smell would indicate you are running rich, and if the coolant is "perfectly clear" it sounds like there is only water in the cooling system.
I'm sorry, the only advice I can give you is to talk to your mechanic. What ever the problem is, it isn't something that lends itself to a do it yourself approach.
Generally white smoke from your exhaust means antifreeze or water is entering the cylinder area. Any amount of antifreeze or water that enters this area will produce a white steam that will be present at the tailpipe area. Look at the under side of the engine oil filler cap & see if it is contaminated with antifreeze, it will have the appearance of a chocolate milkshake. Check to see if the proper amount of antifreeze is inside the radiator and the overflow bottle.......sounds like you have a head gasket or ring problem.
The only other thing that comes to mind would be the brake booster/master cylinder. When the seals inside wear out brake fluid can leak into the booster and then get sucked through the vacuum line that goes from the brake booster to the intake manifold. Thus being burned and producing white smoke.
in case you have been wanting to appropriate off the antifreeze on a commonplace foundation it may point out a head gasket difficulty. Now slightly loss of antifreeze could be envisioned. the element approximately engine oil is that it quite is designed to maintain water from gathering on the backside of the oil pan. Engines do not run properly with water as a lubricant. So if the engine isn't run long sufficient to help the oil evaporate out of it, the oil turns gunky. Left long sufficient this gunk can settle interior the oil pan inflicting engine issues. This usually happens in grocery getter's and short holiday automobiles. So it may desire to be stated which you purely could desire to run the engine longer a minimum of as quickly as a month or so and save the oil replaced. offered the truck isn't loosing coolant.
I would bed you are burning oil.. in that engine it could be a ton of different problems..
