Any cardio is good for losing weight. Add in a little strength training for toning. (If you don't like weights, try exercises like squats and lunges that use your body weight) Running will make you lose weight the fastest (or so I've heard), but riding a bike, walking, or swimming will give you the same results with less strain on your joints.
The elliptical machine worked best for me. I can't run because I have a bad back, so that's a good one for me anyway. I don't think swimming is really all that effective for fat loss. It's a great cardio workout but I've read that you shouldn't expect to lose weight from it.
Personally, I would try swimming or running (or rowing if you have the equipment). Running is a great way to lose fat and to become more toned. However, it has its drawbacks: running a lot on concrete is not good for your joints. Swimming is great cardio; you're not injuring your joints, but you're still getting a good workout in.
