cliques: good or bad?
what would you tell a soon to be middle schooler about cliques? What are the major catagories of cliques (in your mind?) you know jock, prep etc.
what advice would you give a middle schooler about other students: who is a friend, and who is an enemie

Definetly Bad! Be careful of the people who you hang out with. Everyone that smiles at you is not your Friend! Don't hang out with the worng crowd!
Cliques are have been around as long as man itself. In some ways they can be good and some ways they can be bad. You'll always have your major clicks jock, prep, nerd etc. but there are always new and different ones depending on the area in which you live and the culture.
Cliques have their good and bad points. It's better if a kid either stays away from them, or gets in with one that's at least not populated by kids who are on the edge (often the neglected or abused) and likely to start down the drug and alcohol path.
As for "enemies", I would mainly encourage the kid to be on the lookout for the aforementioned "kids on the edge", the rough, troublemaker, bully types. Don't overtly shun them, or he/she might become their focus for abuse, but by the same token, don't actively pursue them. I found it advantageous to act like them when around them, but never actually hang with them on a consistent basis (always had some excuse - "my old man will punch the bejeezuz outta me if I come home late!" - then they think you're one of them, if you know what I mean).
I think it would be interesting, not to TEACH kids about cliques, but let them tell you. Asking a child to narrow his or her focus on cliques by using the tool of writing, which can assist in discovery, could help. If kids think that there are no cliques, why convince them that there is more evil in the world than they initially suspect?

An emeny is someone who acts snotty an thinks they are better than anyone else. (Could a prep but could be a different category) If they swear alot, smell bad, talk about drugs.
Someone who dress nice, smells good, somewhat smart, and is nice is good to hang out with.
