Okay, I know a bit about computers, but this one has me stumped. My ex mother in law (nice lady) was having problems with windows. The specific problem was that "it was working fine, it was a bit loud, so I turned it off to watch my shows. I went back to turn it on, I got to the windows sign on screen, I pressed my icon, went into windows, and it came up to some screen I have to put some numbers in" I drove out to her house to check this out. Indeed it did what she said, but a more technical description of it was she had to put her product key in again. I told her no problem, but since she did not have the disc I would have to take it into my house and fix it. Now this is where things get screwy. I get it into my house (in the trunk of my car, wedged in a car seat, so it wouldn't get messed up) plug the thing in and it just tried to power up, won't boot or anything, just makes loud "fan sounds" (as my 6 year old puts it), over and over, no booting at all.
The computer is a Compaq Presario SR1503WM. It's not that old, maybe mid 2006 she got the thing. She doesn't surf the internet or anything that could have given her a virus. Not that this acts like any virus I have ever seen.
The 2 things I *think* it could be is the power supply is shot, or the mother board is. I haven't ever encountered this problem before, my boyfriend cannot figure it out either, besides these 2 things we came up with. Please help! Thanks a million for any help, in advance.

Here's my thought on your situation. If the power supply is shot you more than likely wouldn't hear anything. No power = nothing moves. I am going to go out on a limb here and assume your "nice lady" hasn't moved that machine since 2006. Over this time frame dust builds up inside the machine. When you removed it from its place dust was shaken up all inside. This can sometimes cause interference on the motherboard or any inside components. First thing I would suggest would be to get a bottle of canned air and blow all the dust out. If that doesn't help check your connections to and from the monitor, power cables, as well as the outlet you have it plugged into. Lastly, if you can, switch to another monitor to see if that makes a difference. I hope all this info helps and wish you the best of luck with this issue
