Lots of differences between them. I have lived in both. As a child I loved living in the rural area. But as an adult I prefer the urban area. Lots to do, a more diverse population and availability of services. In a rural setting especially during winter you have to plan for bad weather as the roads might get bad. You cant just walk to a store at any time of day or night. School systems tend to be poorer so less special services for children that need them. There are more but enough for now.
I personally prefer the urban life... more exposure to other cultures which I find fascinating, more availablity of things, more exposure to the world at large.
It'd be nice if living in SF was as cheap as living in rural Alabama but hey, take the good with the bad, right?
I lived in rural areas a lot of my childhood and had some great times but at this point in my life, I like having a dating pool of more than 20 women and being able to pick up a pack of Djarum Blacks and a 4-pack of Boddington's pub ale. Couldn't do that the last time I visited Central Oregon.
