I have an hp dv6000 special edition with windows vista. when i start up my computer the icons and start menu and task bar will disappear. what is causing this and how can i fix it?

ctrl,alt,delete then click new process and type explorer then click ok
Hate to tell you this but this sounds like a trojan virus.......porbably made in JPS virus maker because those are like the first three options on the list to break when cerating the virus. Try booting into safe mode, hit F8 after the BIOS or HP screen disappers then go to safe mode. If that does not work than try hitting the windows key and see if that pops up the start menu.
this means windows explorer is failing, what you can do is do a repair install of vista that will correct the registery and the Windows System File. Insert your vista dvd and reboot your computer. It should load from the dvd. When you enter the Vista install boot. Accept the Software Agreement, and it should search for versions of Vista to repair. Select the current installation and press R. it will now do a repair install. It will reboot. eject your dvd, and it should load into Vista
