i just got a new computer and it's the "music lovers" dell computer. my monitor came with two different cables one is a DVI cable which is the regular blue one and the other is a VGA cable which is white. they both go to the monitor and the instructions say choose one do not connect both. my question is what is the difference in these two cables. what does the vga cable that the dvi cable doesn`t. thanks in advance.

DVI is Digital Video Interface and it is the newer format of showing video on screen, wether it is a moniter, or a tv screen. It allows for use of digital signals instead of the older VGA standard. Eventually, all moniters and TVs will use digital signals.
You have been given both cables because some moniters still are not able to use digital signals. Sometimes we are given an adapter to convert from VGA to DVI but the moniter has to support this. If a monitor does not have a DVI connection then the adapter plugs into one end of the VGA connection and then into the DVI connection and sits in the middle of the two cables.
To summerize, the VGA is the older connection format and the DVI is the newer of these two. There is an even newer which allows for High Definition signals, HDMI-High Definition Media Interface.
THE DVI CABLE IS a lot better and will give you a better picture... usually the dvi cable is white and vga is blue but dvi is digital and will give you a clearer and better picture quality over all.
good choice in computer! Dell is making some great products now!
CRT monitors have DVI and VGA...if you want a LCD or Plasma screen monitor like that you'll have to get an adaptor. Then again its got HDMI so that monitor will work perfectly with your computer. but to be on the safe side look for an adapter.
DVI is the newer "digital" video signal format designed to give better output from LCDs and saves converting digital data to analogue and back to digital within the LCD monitor,.
Go with DVI
The DVI is white, The VGA is blue. If you have the option, the DVI is the state of the art.
