I have never heard that....but because the lunar orbital plane is 5 degrees different from the orbital plane of the earth (and i think all the other planets), we dont get them often, only when the lunar orbital plane and the earth's orbital plane coincide, in two places called the nodes, and these areas in which there is no object most of the time, and they orbit the earth every 18 or so years...they are hard to predict so people were scared of them.

True....They were also thought to be ill omens.
