they swear to uphold the law and to protect and serve. the local or state government gives them the authority to do so after many background (psychological,criminal,physical) checks are performed on them to make sure they are of sound mind and body.

in a lot of communities the police are looked at as the enemy for one reason or another so the cops get an USvsTHEM mentality.

the police culture is pretty much dead as far as the blue wall of silence goes. after justin volpe of the nypd shoved a broom stick up abler louima's butt and got 30 years most cops rat on each other to save their own skin. plus these days District Attorneys get a feather in their cap if they can lock up a corrupt cop. They no longer protect the police like they used to.

now PD's from New Orleans to LA have civilian review boards to keep the cops in check.

Y, why don't you just shut your mouth if you are as ignorant as that. The police defend themselves from attack, the do not go around beating people for no reason. Only the police are empowered by law to make arrests on warrants, to carry weapons for defense, openly, unless the state is an Open Carry state.
