Which one do you think I should get? I was thinking about getting the D40 at first, but I saw how grainy the pictures were. Then, I looked at the D60 pics and I saw they were OK. The D80 and D90 pictures are great. They look superb...
However, I saw all these images on Nikon's site, so I'm not exactly sure if it's the camera or the type of lens they were using. It's possible that they used a superior lens on a superior camera.
Then on amazon.com, I saw a great deal on the Nikon D80.

This one costs only 800 dollars and it comes with a 18-135 mm Zoom Lens.
Great deal.
However, I was wondering if I was better going with the D40 or D60 and upgrading lenses, or getting a superior model?

If you are looking for a REAL camera, and not a toy...then the starting point is with the D80.... forget the d40 or 60.....
800 bucks for the D80 with that lens sounds pretty good...I was looking at one for 1000 (candian dollars), but the exchange is about the same these days...so 800 is a pretty good price.
The D90 is the newest model out...just released this week i think...
All that being said however, Personally, I Love the Canon 40D. I have been looking at these cameras...for years...waiting for them to become real cameras.. The Nikon d80 is pretty good...but try this....go to www.dpreview.com and spend some time looking at the nikon d80 images...especially the ones shot in low light at the 1600 and 3200 iso settings...the images are just marginally acceptable as photographs.... Then go to the Canon 40D sample images....you will say...OK..now THIS is a CAMERA !! Even the very low light images are amazing.
For me, The Nikons just don't capture as much detail and always appear less clear than the Canon 40D.
If I personally was going to get a camera right now, I would bight the bullet and get the Canon 40D for $1200 vs the Nikon D80 which is $1000 were I am.
Um, the guy below suggests getting a cheap camera and a "BAG" of high end lenses???!!!! Digital SLR lenses go for 500 bucks, minimum for the better quality ones... A BAG of specialty lenses like this guy is recommending will cost thousands.
first thing to consider is how much photography experience you have...is this your first DSLR? if so...and you have a budget of around $800...i would start off with the D40 and spend the rest on some very good nikon lenses designed for specific shots. the D40 is NOT a toy..its probably one of thee best dslr starters around. and most pros will tell you...its the lens that takes the picture. take some photo classes and really learn and practice how to use the cameras manual features. Then once you got some experience under your belt...you can always upgrade to the D80 or D90 (Nikon has announced that the D80 will be available well into 2009) and those quality high-end lenses you bought can still be used on your upgraded Nikon. Now you got skills, a prosumer DSLR, and a bag of high-end lenses! I know many Nikon owners who have the D80 and even D3, D300 pro cameras, but they keep their D40 for quick shots and portability on vacations and family events.
