I was wondering if when you gave birth, did the person who delivered your baby (in a hospital) place the baby on to you straight away or take it away to be cleaned first?
I am not worried that the baby will b messy, but if there is something wrong, they won't know until they take him/her away to be cleaned?
Thank you.

on our two girls they we're cleaned and handed to me (dad) first
It depends on the hospital. I see on TV they always lay the baby on you or at least show it to you. I gave birth over 14 years ago at a catholic based hospital and everything is taboo to them, My sister just had a baby 2 days ago at the same place and they did the same thing. They didnt even offer the dad to cut the cord. They dont believe you should get a copy of the sonogram pictures either. When I had my other kids, I went somewhere else. It was a good hospital, but they were too strict.
she was placed straight onto me after a rub as she wasnt breathing great and was very blue. They know if there is anything major wrong as soon as baby is out , that first cry is a great indication. It really is the best thing for mother and baby to have them delivered onto your chest, it is the best experience in the world and helps baby bond and get warm, and they also feed so well straight away. This is now normal practice in the UK, you get a hole hour of skin to skin contact before they weight etc. A basic assessment is done (APGAR) as they are delivering them.
Hi, have had four delivery experiences & my first child did have a couple of problems which the midwife noticed straight away so don't worry that things may go unnoticed. Subsequently as everything has been ok midwives have given baby a quick wipe and handed straight to me, I did want to get hold of baby asap!Good luck I'm sure everything will be fine.
they put my daughter right up onto my chest. She had extra water on her lungs and they only left her there for a second. The pediatrician was already in the room because they were going to use a vacuum but by the time she walked through the doors the baby was out. I was so great full. When they said the word vacuum, I did as much as i could to get that baby out.
But yes, there was a little problem, but she was only on me for a matter of seconds. They took her to the ICU just to monitor her for a little while. But I was in labor all night long. So i needed the time to rest. Everything was fine in the end.
I believe that the monitoring throughout labour and the appearance of the newborn would alert the staff to any problems, my daughter was placed straight on me as hers was on her and it is an incredible moment for any mother. May I also suggest you look into the information concerning the time to cut the chord - I recently read that the essential stem cells that flow within the chord give the baby the best chance of great health - if left intact for over a minute. It certainly does no harm and is worth considering in light of recent research revealing the imnportance and relevance of stem cells to the immune system.
Good luck and I wish you all the joy motherhood brings.
Namaste
The left her on my tummy until the sorted out cord then cleaned her while the placenta was been sorted.
Their very experienced in what they do and if there is something wrong they will know straight away. Chill out and relax and to put your mind at rest speak to a midwife when you next have an appointment.
Best of luck with baby
Baby can easily be assessed on you tummy/chest. All three of mine were given straight to me. It was probably a couple of hours before they cleaned up my first! My second went straight to me but soon after had to go get a little oxygen blown in her face as she wasn't breathing well. (Fast labor and birth and MW broke my water during pushing which seemed to bring her down in a poor position.) Hubby caught our third and gave her to me.
The nurse cleaned him up and checked him out. They couldn't hand him to me because I had problems delivering the placenta. After all that they handed him to me and took pictures but I feel asleep while this was going on.
(They gave me this nice drug during the labor that would help be sleep during the contractions. I had only one hour of sleep the night before.)
They put my son right on me before doing anything. He was all bloody and it kind of freaked me out a little, but he was still the most beautiful baby I had ever seen. They took him right after though and the nurse cleaned him and let daddy cut the rest of his cord off. Then I laid there for 45min getting stitched up....Good Luck!!
I was surprised, but they did give her to me right away. They do check on them, and make sure they are ok. I don't know how the general experience is for most people, but I'm sure everything is different, depending on if there were any problems or anything during labor and delivery.
