I would recommend the iPhone 3GS. I've had all three generations and I'd have to say that with the 3GS, lag almost disappears. Everything is very smooth and fast.
Also highlights are:
- Voice Control (limited for now)
- Video Recording (and the camera is 3.2 MP instead of 2.0 MP)
- Compass (which is actually useful if you're in a place you don't know very well because it integrates with the Maps application)
Needless to say, I'm sad that I lost my iPhone 3G S as I'm using the iPhone 3G now and I can't get over some of the lagging.
get the 16GB 3G S because you will never fill the 32GB up unless you have a mad amount of music for a phone and the 3G S is much better than the 3G or the 2G

Get the 3gs 16GB, it is faster, it has more space to store music, pictures etc.. It has a couple of extra features like Digital compass etc...
Also as its newer you will get more money when it comes to selling. Also it does video capture (30fps VGA)
