So I'm 14 and I love taking pictures. I have the iPhone 4 and it has an okayish camera. For Christmas, my parents said I could either get a digital or a DSLR camera. I might use the digital camera more often because it is more portable and stuff but the DSLR is a professional camera. My parents want me to get one that I would actually use. I'm afraid I might break the DSLR camera like the next day or something, because it's not like you can bring a big bulky camera to school and take pictures with your friends, right? But my parents said if I get the digital camera, it's kind of useless because the iPhone's camera is the same thing, but it's not. I use my phone mostly to pre-edit pictures then I transfer them to my laptop and edit. Soooo which one should I get? The digital camera is around 250$ and the DSLR is probably 850$ and my parents want me to take photography classes. It's not like I'm gonna be a professional photographer when I grow up or anything.... I want the digital camera but my parents want me to get the DSLR camera, but then I would actually have to use it everyday/a lot. What should I do?
If I got one, it would be these:
Digital: Samsung ST700 in Rose Gold. It has dual screens, perfect for taking pictures of myself. And it has a beauty function too. It also has a baby function so it plays a little clip on the front screen so the baby would be intrested. It also has a jump function so you could put it down and jump, then at the highest point of your jump it would take a picture. I thought this was pretty useful, since I'm an ice skater and it would be cool if I could take non-blurry pictures in mid air. It is a 16.2 megapixel camera. Here's a link to the camera.

DSLR: Undecided/ Sony a55. The functions might not have beauty/baby, but it has 16.2MP, Translucent Mirror Technology™, Quick AF Full HD Movie, GPS tagging, Live View with Phase detection, 10 fps, 15-point auto focus, 18-55mm zoom lens included.
WHAT DO I DO HELP ME!!!!!!

I'd recommend that you get a good-quality complact camera and then, in a few months, if you want to, you could upgrade to a Rebel or something like that. if you do get a DSLR, don't take it to school. It could easily get broken, stolen, etc. Take a look at the Powershot SX150 and the Coolpix L120
If you are serious about photography, then I would get a DSLR and really enhance your hobby. A point and shoot camera doesn't have the same type of quality. You can get an entry level SLR and learn the basics and go from there. After that, you can trade up for a better model.
There is one caveat though. It is addicting. You will want to buy lenses, tripods, remotes, flashes, and other camera accessories. This year alone, I have spent $5,000 on camera equipment. However, I have no regrets. It is a passion of mine and I find it very relaxing. Also, when my camera was bought for me as a birthday gift, I didn't want it. I had zero interest in photos.
Deffintly get the dslr camera !!!! I just got mine and I never put it down . It isn't as big as u think it is and I know plenty of girls and guys that carry it everywhere with thousand dollar lens and they are in perfect condition. I wish my parents offered to get me a dslr so I say u milk it and deffintly get it if there are offering !! Because u may never get an option like this again. Regular digital cameras are all automatic and all the photo editing in the world will never make it comparable to as good quality as a dslr. I say do it , what dO u have to loose ? Dslr are as breakable as digital cameras. Go with the dslr . I suggest canon rebel t2i or Nikon d5000
Nikon COOLPIX P300 as HD video is amazing! The focus stays sharp throughout. I don't think I'll be
using the 1080p mode too often (I have a Canon VIXIA camcorder that records 1080p that I use for
birthdays), 720p has made me very happy. Even the slow-motion mode can record in HD! Check out
YouTube for cool slow-motion videos. A lot of new Canon models recently released can record in
slow-motion but only very low quality, less than 640p.
Get a P&S camera with a huge optical zoom. An iphone doesn't have optical zoom as far as I know; only digital, which is absolutely useless since it does the same effect as cropping and doesn't help with focusing more into dept.
