Yes animals commit suicide and they get depressed too. We had a 2 dogs when I was a kid. They were together for 4 years then 1st dog was hit by the car and died on the spot. The 2nd dog saw it. The 1st dog was buried in the back yard. The 2nd dog always sitting to the grave yard crying and digging a hole. Also the 2nd dog don't want to eat any food at all until he got sick and died after few months. We think the 2nd dog suffered from extreme sadness or trauma so he committed suicide. It happened to the dog even to the birds in the cage as well. Even to the Rabbit too, the rabbit was in extreme sadness once the partner passed away so my sister bought another rabbit to give her rabbit a companion.
Some animals killed on the road because of accident or miscalculate the danger. But that's not the way they commit suicide. Animals have small brain and they rely on instinct. They just withdrawn to everything, like sleeping in one spot & become inactive.
I don't think they commit suicide. I do believe they do have strong feelings about life and other animals/ humans.
They still need love and need to be healthy. When this fails they become sick mentally or physically. This would cause pain and maybe depression in intelligent animals.
Sometimes when cats/dogs are separated from their animal family's you can notice this. Even when one dies they seem to notice and miss them.
Interesting question. Poor sad animals. I wish we could understand them more.
Studies show that animals like dogs and cats miss the connections in their brain telling them "suicide is a good way to go".
They probably get sad because they are unplayed with, but they will do anything disruptive or annoying to get attention, main reason they dig up yards. they do not understand that if you run into a car; you die. they think "ooh! a car!" and thats really it.. hope this helped!
no, never... they have no knowledge of the green cross code which is why they get run over in the road. they get "stunned" by the car headlights and "freeze" in the road.
i know dogs do get separation anxiety and can act "neurotic" but they live very much in the here and now.

I've seen old dogs run in front of cars out of the blue.
According to some vets, yes, they can get depressed.
How would anyone know that? Seriously.

Hi Shelby,
I recently read about this particularly cats and elephants committing suicide
and did a search on it
and discovered they can get that depressed they stop eating and die.
How many innocent miserable moggies will do so before someone helps out
that is the question ?
Good Luck.
Best Wishes.

I would say so because we as humans are animals so i don't see why other animals don't.
