I was watching a nature documentary. There was a leopard mother and cub. The cub had caught its leg on a tree and broken its pelvis. The leopard mother tried helping it but to no avail. She licked the cub several times and eventually left her cub. Did the cub feel a sense of abandonment anyhow or did the leopard mother grieve at all in any way? Do animals experience any emotions akin to grief, loss or sadness?

Yes they do. Have seen and known of this on several occasions. Example : When my parents were first married,My Mother had a beagle, named Snooky. He and My Mother shared a close bond. When My Mother and Father had to leave to a Military base in California they could not take Snooky with them. So she left him with a friend, and they planned to come back for him when they could and were settled. Well,Snooky pined for my Mother,he stopped eating, the people did not tell my Mother this and she thought he was fine, til they called and told her they tried to do everything to keep him happy to no avail,Snooky died. Died of a broken heart. My Mother was devastated. Another story similar, was with a cat who belonged to a friend of mine. So yes,I will say Animals without a doubt that love and are bonded to their owners, feel and suffer grief and loss...and some even die without them. :(
I read it somewhere that an elephant can die of a broken heart. So, yes they have feelings.
I saw one documentary where the cub was taken away by some animal while the mother leopard was out somewhere. She did not know where the cub was a kept roaming around for days in search of it and finally they even showed her crying before she gave up searching. I think they do have feelings like us. They may not experience it as extremely as we all do, but they still experience feelings of loss.
The more higher the organism the more they experience feelings.
Yes. It has been proven that some animals are capable of some emotions. Elephants are famous for that. I just read an article that wolves howl to show a sense of loss when they miss a friend. Dolphins are also emotional animals I understand. And I think any dog owner can testify to them having a sense of attachment.
Yes. There is a heart-warming essay entitled "Do Elephants have souls?" in a recent publication (I'm sure you can find it on the net). The Elephants' behaviors leave little doubt that they grieve and have empathy.
I, personally, assume most of the animal kingdom have SOME of these properties, some of which are probably based at the brain-stem(or reptilian brain) level - and I treat animals accordingly.
We have two pet cats. We sometimes leave them in the care of a pet-sitter f(or 3-4 weeks at a time) who stays in our home with the cats. The behavior of the cats when we leave and we come back leaves little doubt in my mind that our presence is important to their well-being and contentedness.
Absolutely. You've never had a pet lose a family member (human or otherwise) and go into depression?
Ferret rescues and siamese rescues have a hard time with new animals they take in, both types go into depression on losing their owners and are harder to get back to normal to be placed in new homes. Any animal shelter worker can tell you that the animals they get in can have some severe problems adjusting to the loss of their 'people'.
did you know plants and animals have souls? lol
plants respond to your emotions & feelings
they respond to your love most of all xD LOL haha which is funny imo! it will always be funny
the beautiful thing is your plant, all plants can take away the anger from your mind
the tree's big roots and drain all your sorrow from your heart
the wind can blow away your fears far far away
and the sun can rejuvenate your energy
your heart will feel magnificent upon Gaia's nature & blessings of beauty xD upon her CHILDREN ^^
the weird thing again too is that Gaia is God's child as well ^^, Gaia is God's daughter lol xD
Gaia is a spirit, is alive as well xD
I've heard that if you take a caft away from its mom to soon, the cow will walk the field mooing for days. That sounds like loss.
